Laurinburg, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Basketball Team (1-2) picked up its first victory of the season, 79-63 over St. Andrews (0-3), Wednesday night at Harris Court.
L-R sophomore center Matt Kunz (Kernersville, N.C.) led all scorers with 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds in notching a double-double.
Meanwhile, freshman guard Denzel Dillingham (Hickory, N.C.) and sophomore forward Allan Jones (Clemmons, N.C.) added 15 and 14 points, respectively, to lead the Bears to the road win.
St. Andrews lost despite a game-high 17 points from Joe Houpe (Goldsboro, N.C.) and 15 points from Antonio Moffitt (Raleigh, N.C.).
L-R took a 37-24 halftime advantage and led by as many as 25 points (53-28 with 13:46 left) in the second half en route to the win.
The Bears withstood a late surge by the Knights as St. Andrews cut the lead to 16 points on a pair of three-pointers by both Moffitt and Chris Sumski (Charlotte, N.C.) but Lenoir-Rhyne was able to hold on for the victory.
L-R also shot 56 percent from the field (33-of-59) including 79 percent (15-of-19) in the first half and held a 37-18 advantage in rebounding on the evening.
Lenoir-Rhyne next hosts Mount Olive in its 2011-12 home opener on Monday beginning at 7 p.m., inside Shuford Memorial Gymnasium.
St. Andrews will take on Maryland Bible College on Saturday afternoon in the North Carolina Wesleyan Classic in Rocky Mount, N.C. Tip-off for the contest is set for 2 p.m.
