Wingate, N.C. - The Wingate Baseball Team (6-2) defeated Lenoir-Rhyne (2-8), 4-3, Tuesday afternoon at Ron Christopher Stadium in a non-conference regional contest.
Wingate's Greyson Davis (New Bern, N.C.) (1-0) allowed just one run in 5.1 innings of work while striking out seven batters in leading the Bulldogs to the win.
An RBI groundout by Michael Godinez (Cutler Bay, Fla.) in the bottom of the second inning opened the scoring and proved to be the game-winner for Wingate, who never trailed in the contest.
After Chris Vazquez (Tyrone, Ga.) came through with a run-scoring single in the fifth inning to give Wingate the 2-0 lead, Lenoir-Rhyne finally got on the board in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by junior outfielder Rai Robinson (Kings Mountain, N.C.).
The Bulldogs pushed the margin to 4-1 thanks to Brian Yeung's (Raleigh, N.C.) sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth before the Bears made a game of it with two runs in their half of the ninth.
After senior outfielder Stephan Arcieri (Roswell, Ga.) and senior pinch hitter Max Priest (Dunedin, Fla.) scored to cut the lead to 4-3, Wingate's Josh Karr (Richmond, Va.) induced a flyout with the bases loaded to preserve the win. Josh Karr picked up his second save of the year in the process.
At the plate, Wingate's Jacob Karr (Richmond, Va.) led the way with two hits and two runs scored while Jason Hunter (West Chester, Pa.) added two hits and an RBI for the Bulldogs.
Lenoir-Rhyne junior Ryan Reedy (Clearwater, Fla.) fell to 0-2 on the season as he allowed three runs in 5.2 innings pitched in addition to striking out four batters.
Lenoir-Rhyne opens South Atlantic Conference play at home this weekend against Lincoln Memorial with a single game at Bears Field on Friday beginning at 6:00 p.m. Wingate travels to Belmont, N.C., to take on Belmont Abbey Wednesday at 2:00 p.m.
