Hickory, N.C. - The Belmont Abbey Baseball Team (11-4) scored 10 consecutive runs en route to a 12-6 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne (3-11) Tuesday afternoon at Bears Field.
Trailing 2-0 after two innings of play, the Crusaders reeled off 10 straight runs and defeated the Bears for the third time in as many games this season.
Belmont Abbey's Justin Vasquez (Miami, Fla.) hit a two-run home run and finished with five hits and three runs batted in as the Crusaders increased their winning streak to four.
Lenoir-Rhyne scored the game's first two runs in the bottom of the second inning as freshman outfielder Ivan Vieitez (Miami, Fla.) led off the frame with a solo home run, his second of the season.
Belmont Abbey tied the contest at two in the third inning and took the lead for good with two more runs in the fourth. The Crusaders' Joey Frabasile (Hartsdale, N.Y.) came through with the game-winning single in the frame.
Belmont Abbey then broke the game open with five runs in the top of the fifth inning highlighted by Caleb Shore's (Kannapolis, N.C.) two-run double. Shore finished with three hits and three RBI for the Crusaders as well.
The Bears cut the lead in half at 10-6 with four runs in the bottom of the eighth capped off by a two-run double from freshman second baseman Marquis Webb (Stone Mountain, Ga.) but Vasquez came back for the Crusaders with his two-run home run in the ninth.
Belmont Abbey's Nate Cudney (Charlotte, N.C.) (1-0) earned the win after pitching 5.2 innings of scoreless baseball in addition to striking out four batters while L-R junior Christian Hicks (Charlotte, N.C.) fell to 0-1 with the defeat.
Lenoir-Rhyne takes on UNC Pembroke in Pembroke, N.C., on Wednesday beginning at 3:00 p.m. Belmont Abbey, meanwhile, plays at Mount Olive on Friday at 4:00 p.m.
