Bears improve to 12-2 on the year

Hickory, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Team (12-2) ran its winning streak to five with a doubleheader sweep of Lees-McRae (4-7), 8-0 and 8-1, Wednesday afternoon at Bears Field. L-R is ranked No. 18 in NCAA Division II.
Game One - Lenoir-Rhyne 8,
Lees-McRae 0 (five innings)
L-R sophomore third baseman Haily Jarman (Wadesboro, N.C.) and senior catcher Sarah Atkins (Newport News, Va.) led off the bottom of the fifth inning with back-to-back home runs to end the game as the Bears run-ruled the Bobcats.
Senior Dawon Millwood (Hixson, Tenn.) improved to 6-1 on the year after pitching her second straight shutout. Millwood struck out eight batters and limited Lees-McRae to just two hits in the win.
Lenoir-Rhyne opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning then took complete control with a three-run third frame highlighted by a two-run single from freshman outfielder Brittany Coursen (Virginia Beach, Va.).
Both Jarman and Atkins finished with two hits and three runs scored to lead L-R while Lees-McRae's Laurel Gregg (Mars Hill, N.C.) suffered the loss.
Game Two - Lenoir-Rhyne 8, Lees-McRae 1
Atkins hit another home run for Lenoir-Rhyne, a two-run shot in the bottom of the sixth inning, while Jarman added a double, triple and three runs batted in as the Bears swept the Bobcats.
A two-run single by junior first baseman Jessica Fellmeth (Waxhaw, N.C.) was part of Lenoir-Rhyne's three-run third inning as the Bears broke a one-all tie en route to the win.
Jarman added an RBI double and a run-scoring triple in the fourth and sixth innings, respectively, for Lenoir-Rhyne.
Atkins also drove in three runs while L-R senior Lauren Harris (Yadkinville, N.C.) improved to 2-0 on the season after being credited with the win.
Kierstie Moon (Oxford, Ga.) drove in the Bobcats only run in the third inning but Gregg took the loss once again for the Bobcats.
Lenoir-Rhyne next competes in the Catawba Invitational this weekend in Salisbury, N.C. L-R starts off against Massachusetts-Lowell (10:00 a.m.), West Chester (Noon) and Tiffin (4:00 p.m.) on Saturday. Lees-McRae plays at Mars Hill in a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
