Hickory, N.C. - The No. 13 Tusculum College Pioneers (29-5) won easily over Lenoir-Rhyne University (9-27), 24-3, Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference regional contest at Bears Field. The game was a seven-inning affair.
Tusculum scored seven runs in the first inning then broke the contest open with an 11-run fifth inning as the Pioneers ran their winning streak to nine games.
The Pioneers' opening frame was capped off by a two-run home run from Joe Polichetti (Dunkirk, N.Y.). Polichetti drove in four runs in the contest.
Tusculum's Cody Coffman (Cape Coral, Fla.) finished five-for-five with two doubles and four runs batted in while Carlos Santana (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) added four hits and five RBI as the Pioneers finished with 26 hits in the contest.
On the mound, Clint Biggs (Morristown, Tenn.) (1-0) was credited with the win while L-R freshman Hunter Conley (Cornelius, N.C.) fell to 1-1 with the loss.
Sophomore second baseman Mike Gasque (Mebane, N.C.), junior designated hitter Will Whitty (Springfield, Va.) and freshman shortstop Mike Mastroberti (Ramsey, N.J.) all drove in a run for the Bears despite the loss.
Lenoir-Rhyne returns to South Atlantic Conference play on Friday when it plays at Newberry beginning at 6:00 p.m. Tusculum visits SAC-foe Mars Hill for a league game Friday at 3:00 p.m.
