Belmont, N.C. - The Belmont Abbey Baseball Team (27-15) rallied from a four-run deficit to defeat Lenoir-Rhyne (12-34), 9-6, Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference game at Abbey Yard.
The Crusaders' John Cucchiarella (Kantoah, N.Y.) finished with two hits and three RBI and hit the game-winning, two-run triple in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead Belmont Abbey to the win.
Lenoir-Rhyne freshman outfielder Ivan Vieitez (Miami, Fla.) helped the Bears jump out to a 5-1 advantage with a two-run double in the third inning and an RBI single in the fifth frame.
Belmont Abbey's Joey Frabasile (Hartsdale, N.Y.) tied the contest at five with a run-scoring single in the seventh before the Crusaders took control with a four-run eighth inning. Frabasile finished with three hits and a pair of runs batted in as well.
Belmont Abbey's James White (Huntington, W.Va.) improved to 3-1 with the victory while Emilio Pagan (Simpsonville, S.C.) notched his 12th save of the year.
For Lenoir-Rhyne, Vieitez (1-2) led the way offensively with three hits and three RBI but suffered the loss on the mound. In addition, senior outfielder Stephan Arcieri (Roswell, Ga.) and sophomore second baseman Mike Gasque (Mebane, N.C.) added three hits each to lead the Bears' 15-attack despite the loss.
Lenoir-Rhyne returns to South Atlantic Conference play this weekend when it travels to Greeneville, Tenn., to face third-ranked Tusculum on Friday beginning at 6:00 p.m. Belmont Abbey hosts Barton on Friday at 2:00 p.m.
