L-R senior Dawon Millwood threw a no-hitter in the first game of a conference doubleheader sweep of Tusculum, 5-0 and 4-3, Wednesday afternoon at Red Edmonds Field in Greeneville, Tenn.
Greeneville, Tenn. - The No. 19 Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Team (40-11, 12-4) remained in sole possession of first place in the South Atlantic Conference with a key doubleheader sweep of Tusculum (29-20, 9-7), 5-0 and 4-3, Wednesday at Red Edmonds Field.
Game One - Lenoir-Rhyne 5,
L-R senior Dawon Millwood (Hixson, Tenn.) threw the second no-hitter of her career to lead the Bears to the win. Millwood allowed just one walk while striking out three batters in the victory.
Lenoir-Rhyne broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the top of the fifth inning aided by a pair of Tusculum errors.
The Bears then put the game away with three runs in the top of the seventh highlighted by a two-run home run from junior first baseman Jessica Fellmeth (Waxhaw, N.C.). Fellmeth now has a team-leading 11 home runs on the season.
Tusculum's Elizabeth Johnson (Greenville, Wis.) fell to 24-10 on the year after suffering the loss.
Game Two - Lenoir-Rhyne 4, Tusculum 3 (10 innings)
With the score tied at two, the Bears plated two runs in the top of the 10th inning and held on for the victory and the sweep of the Pioneers.
In the frame, senior second baseman Carlee Carpenter (Newton, N.C.) scored on a wild pitch before junior designated player Megan Laxton (Taylorsville, N.C.) added an RBI double for the Bears.
Tusculum scored a run in its half of the 10th inning but Millwood, who went the distance and picked up the win, was able to register the final out and preserve the victory.
Millwood (27-6) allowed just one earned run to go along with four strikeouts while Kaytlin Stroinski (Howell, Mich.) (2-7) suffered the setback for the Pioneers.
The contest was scoreless until each team plated a run in the seventh inning and again in the ninth frame.
Laxton and Fellmeth each finished with two hits for L-R while Tusculum's Brooke Lauritzen (Pulaski, Wis.) extended the game to extra innings with an RBI single with two outs in the seventh.
Lenoir-Rhyne hosts Lincoln Memorial on Senior Day in a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader at Bears Field Saturday beginning at 2:00 p.m. Tusculum plays at Anderson in a conference doubleheader on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
