11th-ranked Lady Cougars hand the Bears their first loss of the season
Lenoir-Rhyne freshman Brianna Belsky scored the Bears' lone goal off a corner kick in a 2-1 setback to Columbus State Sunday afternoon at the Moretz Sports - Athletic Complex in a regional showdown.
Hickory, N.C. - In a key regional contest, the 11th-ranked Columbus State Women's Soccer Team (4-0) remained undefeated after pulling out a 2-1 win over No. 6 Lenoir-Rhyne (3-1) Sunday afternoon at the Moretz Sports - Athletic Complex.
The Lady Cougars' Stephanie Lowery (Sandy, Utah) broke a 1-1 tie with the game-winning goal in the 79th minute to lift Columbus State to the victory.
Lowery received a cross from Emily Husted (Peachtree City, Ga.) and finished with a shot to the lower left corner of the net.
After a scoreless first half, Columbus State got the board with an unassisted goal by Blakely Heideman (Auburn, Ala.) at the 50:15 mark of the contest.
Heideman took advantage of Lenoir-Rhyne's goalkeeper being out of the box and a missed clear by a Bear defender for the score right in front of the net.
Lenoir-Rhyne quickly tied the match when freshman defender Brianna Belsky (Egg Harbour Township, N.J.) bent the ball into the net off a corner kick. The goal was Belsky's first of her collegiate career.
The contest remained one-all until Lowery's game-winning goal with just under 12 minutes to go in regulation.
In goal, Columbus State's Mary Mancin (Gainesville, Ga.) registered the win after stopping two shots while senior Caitlin Scruggs (Torrance, Calif.) suffered the loss despite finishing with eight saves for Lenoir-Rhyne.
In this week’s NSCAA NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Southeast Regional Poll, the Bears were ranked first while the Lady Cougars were second.
Lenoir-Rhyne remains at home to open South Atlantic Conference play on Saturday against Wingate beginning at 5 p.m. Columbus State, meanwhile, plays at Shorter on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
