Rock Hill, S.C. - Lenoir-Rhyne University's Tanner Botts has been named the South Atlantic Conference Football Defensive Player Of The Week, league officials announced this afternoon.
This marks the fifth time this season a Lenoir-Rhyne player has earned the weekly defensive honor.
Botts, a sophomore linebacker from Lawrenceville, Ga., finished with a team-high 15 tackles to go along with two key interceptions in the second half to lead Lenoir-Rhyne to a 44-13 victory over Wingate last Saturday in a conference game in Wingate, N.C.
Botts is currently second on the squad in tackles this year with 64 to along with two quarterback sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
Mars Hill's Duenta Jennings and Carson-Newman's Curt Duncan were named the South Atlantic Conference Offensive and Special Teams Players Of The Week, respectively.
Lenoir-Rhyne (6-2, 4-1), winners of five straight, will travel to Newberry, S.C., to face Newberry (5-4, 3-2) in a conference game on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m., at Setzler Field.
L-R and Newberry also play for the Bishops Trophy, the annual battle between the two Lutheran schools in North and South Carolina. Started in 1987 by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the Bears lead the series by a 13-12 count.
