Belmont, N.C. – The No. 29 Belmont Abbey College Baseball Team (1-0) opened the 2010 season with a 7-3 win over Lenoir-Rhyne University (0-1) Thursday afternoon at Abbey Yard. The Crusaders rallied from a 3-0 deficit with seven unanswered runs to claim the victory.
L-R opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the third inning highlighted by a two-run double by senior outfielder Evan Taylor (Charlotte, N.C.).
Belmont Abbey responded with five runs in its half of the third. The Crusaders’ Roland Rodriguez (Miami, Fla.) tied the game at three with a two-run single before Justin Baxley’s (Marianna, Fla.) RBI double proved to be the game-winner.
Belmont Abbey’s Chris Vazquez (Miami, Fla.) rounded out the scoring with a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Junior outfielder Stephen Andrews (Winston-Salem, N.C.) finished with two hits for L-R while Rodriguez added two hits, two runs scored and two runs batted in for Belmont Abbey.
The Crusaders’ Steven Thiele (Miami, Fla.) (1-0) was credited with the win while junior Brandon Padgett (Statesville, N.C.) (0-1) suffered the setback for the Bears.
Lenoir-Rhyne next visits Mount Olive, N.C., to take on Mount Olive on Saturday beginning at 3 p.m.
