L-R TRACK AND FIELD PUTS ON A STRONG PERFORMANCE AT THE POWERSOX INVITATIONAL

Bears win seven total events

Hickory, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's and Women's Track and Field Teams opened the outdoor portion of their schedule at home with a strong showing at the PowerSox Invitational Saturday at the Irwin Belk Track with seven first-place finishes.

L-R junior Kate Griewisch (Banner Elk, N.C.) won the 1,500-meter run with a school-record 4:44 while freshman Megan Carper (Franklinton, N.C.) placed first in the triple jump (30'02).

The Bears also received a pair of second-place finishes from freshman Kate Coleman (Spring Arbor, Mich.) in the 400-meter dash (1:03), junior Amanda Barnes (Chelmsford, Mass.) in the 5,000-meter run (19:48) and freshman Taylor Oliver (Toms River, N.J.) in the 400-meter hurdles (1:12).

On the men's side, senior Marcus Shuford (Newton, N.C.) won both the high jump (6'2) and the triple jump (42'3 1/2) and junior Daniel Jones (Wrexham, WALES) finished first in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 57.48 seconds.

Both the Lenoir-Rhyne men's and women's squads prevailed in the 1,600-meter relay races with times of 3:30.74 and 4:30.32, respectively.

As a team, Lenoir-Rhyne next competes at the Raleigh Relays on Friday, March 25, 2011.  Griewisch will run in the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field National Championships next Saturday in the 5,000-meter run at Albuquerque, N.M.
