Hickory, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne Football Team (2-2) got back on track with a convincing, 52-10 victory over North Greenville (0-5) Saturday night at Moretz Stadium.
L-R finished with 551 yards of total offense including 413 on the ground en route to winning its eighth straight game at home.
Lenoir-Rhyne scored touchdowns on four of its five possessions in the first half to erase an early, 3-0 deficit while reeling off 52 straight points in the win.
L-R senior quarterback Reuben Haynes (Commerce, Ga.), in his first action since the season opener, passed for 138 yards and two scores to go along with 51 yards on the ground and a touchdown to lead the Bears.
After North Greenville's Justin Gravely (Pickens, S.C.) kicked a 23-yard field goal on the game's opening possession, Haynes responded for the Bears with a one-yard touchdown run that capped an eight-play, 75-yard drive which gave the Bears the lead for good.
An interception by junior defensive back Michael Green (Kingsland, Ga.) on the Crusaders' next possession set up Haynes' 47-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Artis Gilmore (Asheville, N.C.) for a 14-3 Lenoir-Rhyne lead. Green would finish with two interceptions on the evening.
L-R sophomore fullback Austin Beaty (Friendsville, Texas) scored on a one-yard run on the Bears' next drive and the rout was on. Beaty would also finish with two touchdowns on the evening as well.
Lenoir-Rhyne would eventually open up a 28-3 halftime lead that ballooned to 52-3 before North Greenville finally scored a touchdown on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Nelson Hughes (Roebuck, S.C.) to Troy Jones (Effingham, S.C.) in the fourth quarter. Hughes would finish with 247 yards passing despite the loss.
The Bears averaged 7.5 yards per rush and 12 different players ran the ball while Lenoir-Rhyne's defense limited North Greenville to just 70 yards rushing and picked off three passes.
Lenoir-Rhyne returns to South Atlantic Conference play next Saturday when the Bears travel to Brevard, N.C., to face Brevard beginning at 1:00 p.m. North Greenville hosts Newberry on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
