Erik Scanlan was named the Head Men's and Women's Tennis Coach at Lenoir-Rhyne on July 5, 2021. Scanlan comes to Hickory after a five-year stint at Illinois Institute of Technology that included him winning a pair of Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2019 and 2021.
Â
Scanlan built the Scarlet Hawks tennis program from the ground up and led the men to a 10-win campaign in their first season of competition in 2017-18, while the women posted a winning record (9-8) in their inaugural season. In his second season, Scanlan led Illinois Tech's men's squad to an 18-10 mark and a 9-0 NACC record en route to a NACC Regular Season and Conference Tournament Championship, which resulted in Illinois Tech's first NCAA Division III Tournament appearance among all sports. That year, he coached Franklin Zhong to NACC Player of the Year honors and Pol de Santiago to the league's Freshman of the Year. After the 2019-20 season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Scanlan's team duplicated the 2018-19 success with an 8-1 record and a second conference regular season and tournament championship. Scanlan guided the Scarlet Hawks men to their first-ever NCAA Division III Tournament victory with a 5-2 decision over St. Scholastica (Minn.) in May.
Â
The women's program registered a program-best 17-7 overall record and an 8-2 conference mark in 2018-19 and have accumulated 13 NACC Scholar-Athletes. Additionally, Scanlan led Weronika Halicka to the NACC Player of the Year award in 2018 and Morgan Colbert earned the distinction the following season. In total, eight females have earned All-Conference accolades and three doubles teams have been named All-league under Scanlan.
Â
Overall, Scanlan has a 39-30 record on the men's side and a 39-24 mark on the women's.
Â
Scanlan went to Illinois Tech by way of Carthage College, where he served as a graduate assistant coach for the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons. While at Carthage, both the men's and women's programs enjoyed great success. The men's team combined for a 42-14 record over Scanlan's two seasons, winning the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament Championship in both years. Carthage's women's team was also strong, combining for a 35-12 record over the two seasons. In addition, a total of 13 student-athletes were named All-CCIW during Scanlan's tenure at the school (seven men, six women).
Â
Before Carthage, Scanlan attended the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, where he was one of the region's strongest Division III tennis players. A four-year letter winner for the Warhawks and a two-time team captain, Scanlan collected 135 wins in his collegiate career and was named an NCAA All-American in 2010-11, and qualified for the ITA Regional and National Tournaments.
Â
Scanlan also serves as the Camp Director for U.S. Nike Sports Camps and manages daily operations of 60+ junior tennis players per week and has built the camp over a four-year period. While the Camp Director, he develops and executes a weekly camp schedule and curriculum and hires, trains and supervises 10 counselors per week.
