No. 25 Carson-Newman College Football Rallies To Defeat Lenoir-Rhyne, 17-13

Hickory, N.C. ? The No. 25 Carson-Newman College Football Team (6-2, 4-0) rallied from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat Lenoir-Rhyne University (4-4, 1-3), 17-13, Saturday evening at Moretz Stadium in a South Atlantic Conference contest.? With the win, the Eagles defeated the Bears for the 31st straight time and are now the lone undefeated team in league play.

Carson-Newman came back from a 13-3 hole with two fourth-quarter touchdowns en route to its sixth straight win.

Eagle quarterback Alex Good (Greensboro, N.C. ) hit Buck Wakefield (Drummonds, Tenn.) for a seven-yard touchdown pass with 13:09 left before finding Reggie Hubbard (Chattanooga, Tenn.) in the right corner of the end zone for the 22-yard, game-winning touchdown reception.? The winning score came at the 5:09 mark of the fourth quarter.

Lenoir-Rhyne then drove to the Carson-Newman 22-yard line on the ensuing drive but was stopped on downs and the Eagles were able to preserve the win.

L-R scored its lone touchdown of the contest on the game?s opening drive after junior running back Andrew Courman (Beaufort, N.C.) scored from five yards out just 3:01 into the contest.? The six-play, 24-yard drive was set up by a 65-yard kickoff return from sophomore Jamont Jones (Washington, N.C.).

Carson-Newman responded with an eight-play, 47-yard drive capped off by Carlos Lopez?s (Seymour, Tenn.) 36-yard field goal to make it 7-3.

Lenoir-Rhyne then finished off an 11-play, 65-drive on its second possession with a 21-yard field goal by sophomore kicker Colin Corpe (Ocala, Fla.) for a 10-3 advantage.

After a scoreless second quarter, Corpe would add a 27-yard field goal in the third stanza for a 13-3 lead before Carson-Newman?s rally in the final period.

Lenoir-Rhyne senior quarterback Justin Sanders (Monroe, N.C.) finished with 88 yards rushing and 65 yards passing, both team-highs, as the Bears finished with 230 yards on the ground.

Good was Carson-Newman?s top offensive player with 153 yards passing and two scores while Hubbard added 89 yards receiving on seven catches and a touchdown.

Junior linebacker Victor Nito (Douglas, Ga.) led the Bears on defense with nine tackles while Lenoir-Rhyne held Carson-Newman to just 265 yards of total offense including 112 on the ground.? The Eagles entered the game averaging over 302 yards rushing per game, third-best in the nation.? L-R came into the contest ranked first at 327.6 yards per game.

L-R travels to Mars Hill, N.C., to face Mars Hill on Saturday beginning at 2:30 p.m., while Carson-Newman returns home to take on Brevard on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
