Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Soccer Knocks Off No. 21 Tusculum, 2-1, In Overtime To End Regular Season

Hickory, N.C. ? The Lenoir-Rhyne University Women?s Soccer Team (14-6, 4-4) topped No. 21 Tusculum College (14-4-1, 6-2), 2-1, in overtime?Saturday at the Moretz Sports ? Athletic Complex to spoil the Pioneers bid for a regular season SAC Championship.

Sophomore striker Laura Linehan (San Diego, Calif.) scored her 11th goal of the season in the last minute of the first sudden death overtime period to give the Bears the Senior Day victory.

A rain that began as a slight mist early in the day turned into a steady downpour near the end of the first half.? Both teams played stingy defense leading to a scoreless opening frame.?

L-R finally broke through at the 61:56 mark when sophomore Kaelia Frazier (Cedar Falls, Iowa)? gathered a through ball, beat three Tusculum defenders on the dribble and blasted home her third goal of the year to give the Bears the 1-0 advantage.

Tusculum answered quickly as freshman forward Tramicka James (Wilson, N.C.) broke free when she received a pass from freshman Kourtney Kavic (Oakville, Ontario, CANADA) and put it away to even the score at one.

After controlling possession and tempo for much of the match, L-R laid back in the overtime period, waiting to counter attack.? At the 99:07 mark, freshman forward Elizabeth Hawes (Valdese, N.C.) went down the left side with speed and fed Linehan with a drop ball.? Linehan took one touch and buried the left foot blast into the far corner from 17 yards out for the 2-1 victory.

L-R outshot Tusculum, 28-10.?

Senior Katelyn Burwell was excellent in her final game at the Moretz Sports ? Athletic Complex as she made six saves in the victory for the Bears.? Freshman Marjaana Kaaresvirta (Turka, FINLAND) was equally good for the Pioneers as she made eight saves despite the loss.

L- R now prepares for the South Atlantic Conference Tournament where it will travel to Newberry, S.C. to face Newberry College on Wednesday.? Tusculum will host Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday as well.
