Catawba College Overcomes Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Soccer, 3-1, In League Battle

Salisbury, N.C. ? The Lenoir-Rhyne University Women?s Soccer Team (10-3, 1-2) dropped its second straight decision in South Atlantic Conference play on Wednesday as it fell to Catawba College (8-3-1, 3-1), 3-1, at Frock Field.

Freshman midfielder Marianne Broevik (Drammen, NORWAY) tallied the Bears lone goal.? She put L-R ahead early in the match as she capitalized on a penalty kick at the 9:04 mark to make it 1-0 Bear advantage.

However, L-R?s lead was short-lived.? Catawba bounced back from the with haste when Katie Gair (Milton, Ontario, CANADA) put a shot from the top of the box into the upper right corner just 1:42 after the L-R penalty to tie the game at one.? Meritt Rollins (Columbia, S.C.) was credited with the assist.

The Indians took the lead off of a set piece in the 31st minute when Andrea Dunshie (Apex, N.C.) drove the free kick off of the post and Tasha Wilhelm (Mt. Savage, Md.) was there to clean up the rebound for her first goal of the year to give Catawba a 2-1 lead.

For insurance, Catawba capitalized on yet another free kick at the 60:34 mark when Maria Borland (Hagerstown, Md.) one-timed a Wilhelm serve at the six yard line to finally make it 3-1.

Wilhelm finished with a goal and an assist to lead Catawba.

Shots in the game came at a premium as Catawba edged Lenoir-Rhyne in shots (10-9) and shots on goal (5-4).

Catawba?s Lindsay Webster (Hopkinton, Mass.) made three saves in win.? Senior Katelyn Burwell (Carthage, N.C.) made one save in the loss for the Lenoir-Rhyne.? Freshman Caitlin Scruggs (Torrence, Calif.) added a save as she played the final 27 minutes of action.

L-R will return to the Moretz Sports - Athletic Complex for its annual homecoming affair?as it?plays host to league-foe Lincoln Memorial with kickoff slated for 5:00 p.m., on Saturday.
