Hickory, N.C. ? The No. 21 UNC Pembroke Women?s Soccer Team (2-0) handed Lenoir-Rhyne University (1-1) its first loss of the year with a 2-1 win in overtime in the Bears? 2009 home opener at the Moretz Sports ? Athletic Complex in Hickory, N.C.
UNC Pembroke?s Anna Svennson (Norrkoping, SWEDEN) scored both of the Braves? goals including the match-winner just 2:33 into the first overtime on a serve from Brittany Padilla (Jacksonville, N.C.).
L-R broke through just seven minutes into the match when freshman midfielder Elizabeth Hawes (Valdese, N.C.) finished a long breakaway down the center of the field.? The goal was Hawes? second of the year.
The game remained 1-0 until Svennson launched a 25-yarder from the center into the back of the net in the 25th minute to tie the match at one before her heroics in the extra frame.
The Braves? Rea Segoviano (Jacksonville, N.C.) picked up the win in goal after finishing with five saves while Bear senior goalkeeper Katelyn Burwell (Carthage, N.C.) stopped nine shots despite the loss.
Lenoir-Rhyne next travels to Gaffney, S.C., to face Limestone on Tuesday beginning at 2 p.m.
