Lenoir-Rhyne Football Shuts Out Davidson, 42-0

Davidson, N.C. ? The Lenoir-Rhyne University Football Team (2-1) bounced back Saturday afternoon with a 42-0 win over Davidson College (0-2) at Richardson Stadium.? The Bears, who snapped a three-game losing streak to the Wildcats, scored touchdowns off of three Davidson turnovers in recording their first shutout in three years.

Lenoir-Rhyne rushed for 370 yards, including a game-high 140 from junior tailback Andrew Courman (Beaufort, N.C.), and held Davidson without a point for the second straight game.

The Bears struck first after sophomore defensive back Jamont Jones (Washington, N.C.) picked off a Wildcat pass on the first play of the game.? From there, L-R put together a seven-play, 41-yard drive culminated by sophomore running back Antwain Ross? (Grover, N.C.) nine-yard touchdown run around the right side for a 7-0 advantage just 3:09 into the contest.

L- R pushed the lead to 14-0 on another Davidson turnover midway through the second frame.? Bear senior linebacker Dewayne Jones (Reidsville, N.C.) recovered a Wildcat fumble at the home team?s 25-yard line.?? Senior quarterback Justin Sanders (Monroe, N.C.) finished the drive off with a two-yard run into the end zone on a quarterback sneak with just under six minutes left in the first half.

Lenoir-Rhyne then broke the game wide open with two long touchdowns runs in the third quarter:? 77 yards from sophomore fullback Byron Darby (Gastonia, N.C.) and 95 yards from Courman, both career-longs, as the Bears pushed the lead to 28-0.

Sophomore running back Le?Quan McCorkle (Sherrills Ford, N.C.) made it a five-touchdown L-R advantage with a two-yard run set up by a blocked punt early in the final stanza.? The Bears finished off the scoring when sophomore defensive lineman Mike Harold (Newton, N.C.) returned a fumble two yards for a touchdown with 3:32 left in the contest.

On defense, L-R sophomore linebacker Richard Walker (Loganville, Ga.) led the way with seven tackles while the squad recorded four sacks and forced five turnovers in the contest.? Sophomore defensive back Cam Thompkins (Sanford, Fla.) added two interceptions as well for the Bears.

Davidson quarterback Michael Blanchard (High Point, N.C.) led the Wildcats with 190 yards passing.

L-R last blanked an opponent on September 23, 2006, when it defeated Benedict on the road by a 17-0 score.

Lenoir-Rhyne returns home to face North Greenville on Saturday, September 19, beginning at 7 p.m.
