Hickory, N.C. ? The Lenoir-Rhyne Women?s Soccer Team (6-1, 1-0) won its fifth straight match on Wednesday night at the Moretz Sports ? Athletic Complex as it knocked off South Atlantic Conference-foe Brevard College (4-3, 0-1), 3-0.? Three different players scored for the Bears as they opened league play on a strong note.
Sophomore midfielder Mariel Mena (Gainesville, Fla.) put L-R on the board first in the 22nd minute when she intercepted an errant pass from the Brevard defense and dropped a long chip from 25 yards out.
The same trend continued into the second half as L-R continued to go to the goal.? At the 50:38 mark, sophomore midfielder Kaelia Frazier (Cedar Falls, Iowa) broke free around her mark deep on the right side and drove a cross to sophomore forward Laura Linehan (San Diego, Calif.), who headed home the Bears? second tally.? The goal was Linehan?s sixth of the season.
Freshman forward Elizabeth Hawes (Valdese, N.C.) finished off the scoring for L-R when she cleaned up a Linehan drive at net in the 65th minute.? Brevard goalkeeper Sydney Douglas (Houston, Texas) made a great save stretching to her right but the rebound bounced out to Hawes, who knocked home her team-leading eighth goal of the year.? Linehan was credited with the assist.
Senior goalkeeper Katelyn Burwell (Carthage, N.C.) made four saves and earned her first complete shutout of the season for the Bears.? Douglas stayed busy for the Tornados as she made 8 saves on the night despite the loss.
L-R will stay at home this weekend as its hosts Chowan on Saturday beginning at 2 p.m.
