Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Soccer Wins Over Newberry, 1-0, With A Last-Minute Goal

Hickory, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne University Women's Soccer Team (11-1-1, 6-0) kept its league championship hopes alive with a thrilling, 1-0 win over Newberry College (3-10, 3-4) Saturday evening at the Moretz Sports - Athletic Complex.? L-R sophomore forward Elizabeth Hawes (Valdese, N.C.) scored the lone goal with 32 seconds remaining.

Hawes, a first-team All-American and the SAC Player Of The Year in 2009, received a long diagonal pass from junior midfielder Kaelia Frazier (Cedar Falls, Iowa) and kicked the ball over the outstretched hands of the Newberry goalkeeper for the game-winner.

Lenoir-Rhyne held a 22-6 advantage in shots taken and remained undefeated in its last 11 matches (10-0-1 during that span).? L-R, which entered the match ranked seventh in the latest NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Poll, also improved its home record on the season to 7-0.

L-R sophomore goalkeeper Caitlin Scruggs (Torrance, Calif.), the current league player of the week, notched three saves en route to her fourth shutout in the last five contests.? Newberry's Megan Hrenchir (Lawrence, Kan.) suffered the loss in goal despite allowing just one goal to go along with seven saves.

L-R looks to remain in sole possession of first place in the South Atlantic Conference when it travels to Salisbury, N.C., to face Catawba in a key league contest Wednesday at 7 p.m.? Newberry plays USC Aiken in Aiken, S.C., on Wednesday beginning at 5 p.m.
