Wingate, N.C. - The Wingate University Women's Soccer Team (8-2-3, 5-1-1) snapped Lenoir-Rhyne University's (12-2-1, 7-1) 12-match unbeaten streak with a 1-0 victory Saturday afternoon in a South Atlantic Conference contest.
Wingate's Casey King (Danvers, Mass.) scored the lone goal of the match in the 78th minute to lift the Bulldogs to the win.? King headed the ball into the net off a deflected shot by Kelly Adams (Matthews, N.C.), whose header attempt as well off a corner kick was saved by L-R sophomore goalkeeper Caitlin Scruggs (Torrance, Calif.).
Wingate held a 14-13 advantage in shots taken while the Bulldogs' Miriam Boucher (Calgary, Alberta, CANADA) picked up the shutout in goal after stopping seven shots on goal.
Scruggs suffered the loss despite allowing just one goal to go along with six saves for her first setback of the year.? L-R maintains a half-match lead over Carson-Newman at the top of the league standings.
In the current NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Rankings, the Bears?are fifth while the Bulldogs entered the contest ranked seventh.
Lenoir-Rhyne returns home to face Queens Tuesday at 7 p.m., as the Bears celebrate Senior Day.? Wingate next?hosts St. Andrews Presbyterian on Monday at 3 p.m.
