Greeneville, Tenn. - The Lenoir-Rhyne University Women's Soccer Team (13-2-1, 8-1) won its first-ever South Atlantic Conference Regular Season Championship with a 3-1 victory over Tusculum College (8-8-1, 3-5-1) Saturday evening at Pioneer Field.
L-R, which shares the 2010 title with Carson-Newman, wins the tiebreaker between the two schools after defeating the Eagles earlier in the season and will claim the top seed in next week's league tournament.? Official pairings will be announced on Sunday.
Lenoir-Rhyne junior defender Casey McDonnell (Toms River, N.J.) opened the scoring in the 32nd minute with her first goal of the year.? McDonnell took a cross from senior midfielder Audrey Moore (Dublin, IRELAND) and finished off a shot from the top of the penalty box.
Sophomore All-American midfielder Elizabeth Hawes (Valdese, N.C.) made it 2-0 for the Bears at the 55:14 mark of the second half after taking a through ball from Moore, who was credited with the assist, and one-timing it past the Tusculum goalkeeper.
Moore and Hawes combined on Lenoir-Rhyne's third and final goal of the match in the 63rd minute when Moore scored on a cross from Hawes at the goal line.?
Moore led Lenoir-Rhyne with four points (a goal and two assists) while sophomore goalkeeper Caitlin Scruggs (Torrance, Calif.) picked up the win in goal after allowing just one score while tallying four saves.
Tusculum's lone goal was scored by Tramicka James (Wilson, N.C.), her team-leading 16th of the season, in the 78th minute.? The Pioneers' goalkeeper, Rachael Jennings (Asheville, N.C.), suffered the loss despite stopping seven shots.
