Rock Hill, S.C. - The top-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne University Women's Soccer Team (15-2-1) advanced to the championship of the 2010 Food Lion SAC Tournament with a 2-0 win over fourth-seeded Newberry College?(5-13-1) Friday in the semifinals at Manchester Meadows.
Lenoir-Rhyne, which tied?the school record for wins in a season with the 1997 squad, will face Wingate (13-2-3), the third seed, on Sunday in the finals beginning at 1 p.m.? Wingate defeated seventh-seeded Tusculum, 3-1, in the other semifinal match Friday.
Junior midfielder Catherine Hauck (Lake Mary, Fla.), this season's conference player of the year, opened the scoring at the 25:54 mark of the first half.? Hauck scored from eight yards out off a deflection for her seventh goal of the season for the Bears.
Senior midfielder Audrey Moore (Dublin, IRELAND) gave the Bears a 2-0 advantage just 3:12 after intermission when she scored from 10 yards out off a cross from junior midfielder Kaelia Frazier (Cedar Falls, Iowa).
Lenoir-Rhyne was in complete control throughout the match as it held a 17-1 advantage in shots taken in shutting out Newberry for the second time this year.
Sophomore goalkeeper Caitlin Scruggs (Torrance, Calif.) picked up her seventh shutout of the year for L-R while Newberry's Megan Hrenchir (Lawrence, Kan.) suffered the setback despite tallying six saves in the contest.
L-R also advances to the finals of the conference tournament for the second consecutive season.
