Lenoir-Rhyne Football Puts Away Davidson, 41-13

Hickory, N.C. ?? The Lenoir-Rhyne University Football Team (2-1) took advantage of five turnovers including three first-half interceptions en route to a 41-13 win over Davidson College (0-2) Saturday night at Moretz Stadium.

In addition, junior fullback Le?Quan McCorkle (Sherrills Ford, N.C.) scored three rushing touchdowns and the Bears registered six sacks on the night in recovering from last week?s setback.

The two teams traded touchdowns to start with Lenoir-Rhyne senior running back Gaston Miller (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) scoring on a six-yard touchdown run in the first quarter before Davidson?s Kenny Mantuo (Weston, Fla.) carried the ball in from nine yards out early in the second stanza for 7-7 tie.

From there, Lenoir-Rhyne took control with three straight touchdowns to build a 28-7 lead entering halftime.? Bear senior halfback James Pone (Wilson, N.C.) started the run with a 59-yard jaunt on the first play after the Wildcats tied the game.

McCorkle then scored on consecutive touchdown runs of three and one yards, respectively, for the 21-point Lenoir-Rhyne advantage.? Both scores were set up by Davidson turnovers.? In all, four of the Bears? six touchdowns were after the Wildcats turned the ball over.

Lenoir-Rhyne then put the game away with McCorkle?s third and final score in the third quarter from 18 yards out that culminated a six-play, 69-yard touchdown drive.

The two squads traded touchdowns in the fourth quarter for the 41-13 final.

L-R, ranked first in rushing yards in NCAA Division II entering the game, finished with 266 on the ground led by Pone?s 70 yards on just five carries.?

Freshman linebacker Ricky Fawbush (Dacula, Ga.) led the Bears with a game-high seven tackles (all solo) while junior defensive lineman Nelson Bullard (Shelby, N.C.) finished with two quarterback sacks.

Davidson?s Jonathan Carkhuff (Marietta, Ga.) led the Wildcats with 151 yards passing while Mantuo added a game-high 89 yards on the ground and one score in the losing effort.

Lenoir-Rhyne hits the road for the first time this year as it faces North Greenville next Saturday in Tigerville, S.C.? The game is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m.? Davidson, meanwhile, plays at Campbell next Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
