Hickory, N.C. ? The Concord University Football Team (2-0) remained unbeaten on the season as it held on to defeat Lenoir-Rhyne University (1-1), 20-17, Saturday night at Moretz Stadium.

Concord?s Brian Kennedy (Centreville, Va.) rushed for a game-high 171 yards and two touchdowns including the game-winning score with 9:42 left in the fourth quarter as the Mountain Lions defeated the Bears for the second straight year.

Concord struck first when quarterback Zack Grossi (Jefferson, Fla.) found All-American wide receiver Thomas Mayo (Reston, Va.) in the end zone from 19 yards out with 4:26 left in the first stanza which culminated an eight-play, 80-yard drive.

L-R battled back with 10 points in the second quarter to take a 10-7 lead into the break.? L-R junior placekicker Colin Corpe (Ocala, Fla.) connected on a 28-yard field goal before senior running back Gaston Miller (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) broke through with a 65-yard touchdown run.? Miller finished with a team-high 107 yards on just four carries.

Kennedy?s six-yard touchdown run in the third quarter gave the Mountain Lions the lead once again at 14-10.

The advantage, however, was short-lived as Lenoir-Rhyne responded with a 15-play, 81-yard drive capped off by senior halfback James Pone?s (Wilson, N.C.) 21-yard touchdown run around right end with 14:14 remaining in the contest.

After a Concord missed field goal on the following drive, the Mountain Lions responded with a fumble recovery on the Lenoir-Rhyne 11-yard line.? From there, Kennedy punched it in from two yards out which proved to be the game-winner.

The Bears blocked a field goal on the Mountain Lions? next possession and moved the ball to the Concord 34-yard line but a 51-yard field goal attempt to tie the contest fell short and the visitors held on for the win.

Grossi added 299 yards passing and Mayo finished with eight catches for 131 yards as Concord held a 452-344 advantage in total offense.

Lenoir-Rhyne rushed for 319 yards and senior free safety Marcus Shuford (Newton, N.C.) and junior cornerback Jamont Jones (Washington, N.C.) added 13 and 12 tackles on defense, respectively, despite the setback.

Lenoir-Rhyne remains at home next Saturday when it faces Davidson beginning at 7 p.m., while Concord plays at West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday, September 18, at 1 p.m.
