L-R is now tied atop the league standings with Mars Hill, who was off this week.
L-R sophomore halfback Corron Boston (Durham, N.C.) finished with 201 total yards and four scores as the Bears defeated the Wolves for the first time since 2005.? Lenoir-Rhyne also retained the Bishops Trophy, the annual battle between the two Lutheran schools of North and South Carolina.
Boston rushed for a career-high 138 yards and three scores while catching two passes for 63 yards and a touchdown as L-R rallied from a 21-10 deficit in the second quarter to win its third straight game.
After Newberry's Terrence Wilson (Mayesville, S.C.) scored from one yard out with 9:27 remaining before halftime for a 21-10 lead, Boston took over with three straight touchdowns to give the Bears a 31-21 advantage entering break and never trailed again.? The third score was a 49-yard touchdown run with 43 seconds left before intermission.
L-R's big plays continued in the second half as senior quarterback Major Herron (Kingsland, Ga.) found sophomore halfback Graham Duncan (Gainesville, Ga.) for a 70-yard touchdown pass on the first play?after the break?before sophomore Michael Green (Kingsland, Ga.) returned a punt 68 yards for a score early in the fourth quarter.
Green, who also had an interception in the contest, now has two punt returns for scores this year.
Newberry's offense was productive all day and the Wolves cut the margin to 48-42 when Wesley Brown (John's Island, Ga.) scored from three yards out with 6:34 left in the contest but the Bears responded with a nine-play, 71-yard drive capped off by Boston's fourth and final touchdown, a nine-yard rush, to put the?game out of reach.
Herron finished with 133 yards through the air on just three completions to go along with 103 yards on the ground as L-R held a 479-406 advantage in total yards.
Newberry quarterback W.T. Murden (West Columbia, S.C.) finished with 261 yards passing and two scores while Brandon Bostick (Florence, S.C.) caught nine passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns despite the loss.
Senior placekicker Colin Corpe (Ocala, Fla.) hit two field goals of 29 and 35 yards, respectively, and became the school's all-time leader for points for a kicker with 256 for L-R.
On defense, Newberry's Apollo Stretch (Columbia, S.C.) led all tacklers with 17 while junior linebacker Demetrius Green (Cedartown, Ga.) added a team-high 11 takedowns for the Bears.
Lenoir-Rhyne travels to Salisbury, N.C., to take on long-time rival Catawba in its regular season finale next Saturday beginning at 1:30 p.m.? Newberry returns home to host Brevard Saturday at 2 p.m.
