Hickory, N.C. - The eighth-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Soccer Team (3-1) rolled to a 4-1 win over Belmont Abbey (1-3) Wednesday night at the Moretz Sports - Athletic Complex.
Junior forward Carley Griffin (Fresno, Calif.) and senior?All-American?midfielder Catherine Hauck (Lake Mary, Fla.) each?scored a goal and tallied an assist while senior midfielder Mariel Mena (Gainesville, Fla.) added a pair of assists as the Bears won their second consecutive match.
Griffin opened the scoring in the 18th minute when?she scored just outside the top of the box from about 20 yards out.
Griffin helped push the Bears margin to 2-0 at the 21:47 mark when she passed to Hauck for the goal.?
Hauck stepped to right and fired over the head of the Crusader goalkeeper for her team-leading third goal of the season.
Belmont Abbey cut the margin to 2-1 in the 52nd minute when Anada Gebreyesus (Alameda, Calif.) scored right in front of the net off a deep cross from the right by Alana Ryczek (Huntersville, N.C.).
L-R, however, quickly took control again after freshman midfielder Lauren Donovan (Hollywood, Md.) scored just three minutes later when she finished off a corner kick.? Mena was credited with the assist.
Senior midfielder Kaelia Frazier (Cedar Falls, Iowa) rounded out the scoring at the 60:17 mark of the contest with a rocket shot from about 25 yards out.
The goals were Donovan and Frazier's first of the season.
Senior goalkeeper Caitlin Scruggs (Torrance, Calif.) won for the Bears, who out-shot the Crusaders by a 19-7 count.? Meanwhile, Hannah Kohls (Cincinnati, Ohio) suffered the loss in goal despite making six saves.
L-R opens league play this Saturday when it travels to Anderson, S.C., to take on Anderson beginning at 1 p.m.? Belmont Abbey plays at Limestone Saturday at 2 p.m.
