No. 8 Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Soccer Comes From Behind To Defeat Carson-Newman, 2-1

Junior All-American midfielder Elizabeth Hawes assisted on the game-winning goal for No. 8 Lenoir-Rhyne in a 2-1 victory over Carson-Newman in a league contest Tuesday evening in Jefferson City, Tenn.

Jefferson City, Tenn. - The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Soccer Team (6-1, 3-0) remained undefeated in the South Atlantic Conference as the Bears came from behind to defeat Carson-Newman (3-4, 1-2), 2-1, Tuesday evening at McCown Field.

L-R, winners of five straight matches and ranked No. 8 in NCAA Division II, has won all three of its league matches on the road so far this year.

Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Lenoir-Rhyne rallied with two goals after intermission to come away with the victory.

L-R senior forward Laura Linehan (San Diego, Calif.) tied the score in the 62nd minute with her team-leading fifth goal of the season when she volleyed on a free ball from about 25 yards out.

Lenoir-Rhyne junior forward Carley Griffin (Fresno, Calif.) then scored the game-winner at the 71:05 mark on a goal from the left side.? Junior midfielder and two-time All-American Elizabeth Hawes (Valdese, N.C.) was credited with the assist.

Carson-Newman opened the scoring in the 17th minute on Trenna Howell's (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) team-leading ninth goal of 2011 but the Eagles were shut out the rest of the way.

L-R held an 18-6 advantage in shots taken while junior Caitlin Scruggs (Torrance, Calif.) picked up the win in goal after allowing just one score.

Carson-Newman's goalkeeper Sarah Tompkins (Franklin, Wis.) suffered the loss despite tallying nine saves in the contest.

L-R travels to Columbus, Ga., to take on Montevallo on the first day of the Hughston Clinic Shootout Friday beginning at 2:30 p.m.? Carson-Newman plays at North Georgia Saturday at 5 p.m.
