Athens, W.Va. - The Lenoir-Rhyne University Football Team (1-0) got its 2011 season off to a rousing start with a 26-6 win over Concord University (0-1) Saturday night at Callaghan Stadium.

L-R Head Coach Mike Houston also picked up the victory in his coaching debut as Bear mentor.

Senior quarterback Major Herron (Kingsland, Ga.) accounted for three touchdowns (two passing and one running) and finished with 194 total yards while redshirt freshman fullback Isaiah Whitaker (Salisbury, N.C.) led the Bears ground game with?86 yards as Lenoir-Rhyne snapped a two-game losing streak to Concord.

Lenoir-Rhyne, who led the nation in rushing last season, held a 422-185 edge in total yards including 291 yards on the ground.

The Bears also held the ball for 40:51 out of the possible 60 minutes of regulation and limited Concord to?43 yards rushing for the game.

Lenoir-Rhyne opened the scoring on its second drive of the night when Herron found junior tight end Jared Thompson (Statesville, N.C.) in the back of the end zone from 14 yards out late in the first quarter that capped off an eight-play, 75-yard drive.

Concord quickly got on the board early in the second quarter when running back Brian Kennedy (Centreville, Va.) scored from five yards out on the ground.?

The Bears, however, extended the lead to 9-6 when senior defensive back Jamont Jones (Washington, N.C.) returned the blocked extra point nearly 100 yards for a two-point conversion.

Herron's second touchdown pass of the game, a 21-yarder to sophomore half back Corron Boston (Durham, N.C.), with 27 seconds remaining before intermission pushed L-R's advantage to 16-6.

Herron scored from two yards out on the ground to increase the margin to 23-6 at the 1:49 mark of the third quarter.? The score finished off a 10-play, 78-yard drive for the Bears.

Senior placekicker Colin Corpe (Ocala, Fla.) rounded out the scoring for the Bears with a 21-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.

On defense, the Bears were led by sophomore linebacker Zach Long (Advance, N.C.) with seven tackles while the Mountain Lions were paced by Jake Lilly's (Bluefield, W.Va.) 16 tackles.

L-R remains on the road next Saturday when it travels to Davidson, N.C., to take on Davidson College beginning at 7 p.m.? Concord, meanwhile, faces Elon on the road Saturday at 7 p.m., as well.
