Hickory, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne University Women's Soccer Team (11-1, 7-0) stayed atop the South Atlantic Conference standings with a 2-0 victory over Carson-Newman (2-10-1, 0-6-1) Saturday evening at the Moretz Sports - Athletic Complex.
The Bears, ranked No. 20 in NCAA Division II, received goals from freshman midfielders Garcelle Alequine (Wilmington, Del.) and Kendall Smith (Asheville, N.C.) in the win.
Lenoir-Rhyne also won its eighth straight?match and shut out its four consecutive opponent.
Alequine scored just 5:15 into the match from about 20 yards out?with a shot just over the Carson-Newman goalkeeper.
Smith made it a 2-0 score in the 74th minute of action with a rebound shot off the crossbar.? Sophomore defender Hanna Kiebel (Parker, Colo.) was credited with the assist.
Senior Caitlin Scruggs (Torrance, Calif.) earned her fourth shutout of the season for the Bears, who held a 28-4 advantage in shots taken in the victory.? Scruggs tallied a pair of saves as well.?
Carson-Newman's Tiarna McKenna (Lisburn, NORTHERN IRELAND) suffered the loss in goal despite stopping 10 shots in the match.
Lenoir-Rhyne, which has won 17 straight conference regular season matches dating back to 2010, faces Tusculum in a league showdown on Wednesday beginning at 5:00 p.m., in Greeneville, Tenn.
Carson-Newman, meanwhile, plays at Trevecca Nazerene on Wednesday, October 17, at 6:00 p.m.
