Anderson, S.C. - The 11th-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Soccer Team (13-1-2, 9-0) won the South Atlantic Conference Regular Season Championship outright for the second straight year with a 2-0 win over Anderson (7-6-3, 4-3-2) Saturday afternoon at Trojan Stadium.
L-R received first-half goals from freshman midfielders Garcelle Alequine (Wilmington, Del.) and Kendall Smith (Asheville, N.C.) as the Bears won their third straight league title.
Alequine opened the scoring in the 28th minute with a shot from about 30 yards out that reached the left corner of the net.
Smith rounded out the scoring with just over three minutes remaining in the first half with a shot just left of the box which landed in the top right corner?of the net.? Both Alequine and Smith now?have six goals on the year.
L-R senior goalkeeper Caitlin Scruggs (Torrance, Calif.) notched her sixth save of the season as she tallied three saves for the Bears, who remained unbeaten in their last 12 matches (10-0-2).? Anderson's Kaityn Neipp (Anderson, S.C.) suffered the loss in goal despite finishing with seven saves.
The Bears, who held a 16-7 advantage in shots taken, also won their 19th straight league regular season contest dating back to the 2010 season.
Both teams will next compete in the 2012 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Women's Soccer Tournament beginning with the quarterfinal round on Tuesday.? The Bears are guaranteed the top seed in this year's tournament.? The pairings for the conference tournament will be announced this weekend.
