Anderson, S.C. - The Anderson University Men's Basketball Team (15-4, 10-1) remained in sole possession of first place in the South Atlantic Conference with a 79-66 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne University (10-10, 6-5) Wednesday night at the Abney Athletic Center.
The Trojans' Denzail Jones (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) led the way with a game-high 31 points as Anderson rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit for the win.
After falling behind by a 43-33 score at intermission, Anderson outscored Lenoir-Rhyne, 46-23, in the second half to sweep the season series from the Bears.
L-R lost despite a team-high 20 points from senior guard Kevin Davis (Charlotte, N.C.) and 15 points from sophomore reserve forward Allan Jones (Clemmons, N.C.).
Jones (13 points in the first half) helped stake Lenoir-Rhyne to the 10-point halftime lead.
A 14-2 run, capped off by a field goal from Kyle Sledge (Powder Springs, Ga.), put Anderson ahead at 51-50 with 10:30 remaining.
Both teams continued to battle back-and-forth before Anderson took the lead for good at 67-65 with 3:34 remaining in the contest on a pair of free throws by Jones.? The free throws were part of a 14-1 Trojan run over the final 4:42 of the game as Anderson held L-R without a field goal for the duration.
Anderson shot 50 percent (25-of-50) from the field and 83 percent (24-of-29) from the free throw line.? Jones was 14-of-16 from the charity stripe as well and hit three treys in the win.
Sophomore guard Bryce Hawkins (Charlotte, N.C.) added 10 points for the Bears, who saw their two-game winning streak snapped in the process.
Lenoir-Rhyne faces Newberry in a conference contest at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium on Saturday beginning at 6:00 p.m.? Anderson, meanwhile, takes on league-rival Mars Hill Saturday on the road at 4:00 p.m.
