Newberry, S.C. - The fifth-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Basketball Team (12-16) saw its 2011-12 season come to an end with an 85-70 loss to fourth-seeded Newberry (16-11) Wednesday evening in the First Round of the 2012 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament at Eleazer Arena.

With the victory, Newberry advances to the tournament semifinals to face top-seeded Anderson on Saturday beginning at Noon at Catawba Valley Community College.

Five players scored in double figures for Newberry, including a game-high 19 points from Quayshun Hawkins (Columbia, S.C.), and the home team hit 12 three-pointers on the night en route to the win.? Hawkins hit five of those three-pointers.

Junior forward B.J. Beasley (Charlotte, N.C.) led the Bears with 13 points on five-of-seven shooting while senior guard Kevin Davis (Charlotte, N.C.) and sophomore guard Jarrick Brown (Raleigh, N.C.) added 11 points each in the loss.

Newberry, who earned?a trip to the tournament semifinals for?just the fourth?time in?its 15 years in the conference,?raced to a 43-28 lead at halftime as the squad hit 10 three-pointers before intermission.

Newberry kept the momentum going in the second half and led by as many as 25 points on a lay-up by Aegir Steinarsson (Reykjavik, Iceland) for a 74-49 advantage with 10:02 remaining in the contest.? Steinarsson finished with 13 points and hit three treys on the night.

Senior guard Jon Hathcock (Concord, N.C.) was the fourth and final player to score in double figures for the Bears as he tallied 10 points to go along with three steals in the setback.

Lenoir-Rhyne was forced into 21 turnovers and hit just four-of-14 three-point attempts (29 percent) in losing its fifth straight game to end the year.
