Hickory, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Soccer Team (5-1, 2-0) rallied from one goal down to defeat Catawba (3-4, 0-2), 2-1, in overtime in a South Atlantic Conference contest Wednesday evening at the Moretz Sports - Athletic Complex.
L-R senior midfielder Carley Griffin (Fresno, Calif.) ended the contest with the game-winning goal just 2:07 into the first overtime.
Griffin headed in a cross from freshman forward Leah Mullins (Kissimmee, Fla.) for her first goal of the season as the Bears remained unbeaten in league play on the year.
Mullins had tied the score at one in the 76th minute after taking the ball down the right side and firing past a diving Catawba goalkeeper.? The goal was Mullins' team-leading sixth of the year.
After a scoreless first half, Juliana Conte (Hampton, Ontario, CANADA) got Catawba on the board with a goal at the 63:13 mark of the contest.
Lenoir-Rhyne, which held a 30-12 advantage in shots taken, also won its 12th straight league match dating back to the 2010 season.
In goal, L-R senior goalkeeper Caitlin Scruggs (Torrance, Calif.) picked up the win after stopping four shots while Catawba's Angelica Pawlowski (Las Vegas, Nev.) suffered the loss despite tallying 10 saves on the match.
Lenoir-Rhyne travels to Harrogate, Tenn., for a South Atlantic Conference match on Saturday against Lincoln Memorial beginning at 1:00 p.m.? The contest is also the first road match on the year for the Bears.? Catawba, meanwhile, hosts Newberry in a league match on Saturday beginning at Noon.
