Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Soccer Falls To Wingate, 1-0, In 2016 SAC Championship Semifinals

Rock Hill, S.C. – The top-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne University Women's Soccer Team (13-4-2) suffered a 1-0 loss to Wingate (12-5-1) in the semifinals of the 2016 South Atlantic Conference Championship Friday morning at Manchester Meadows.

The Bulldogs, the fifth seed in this year's tournament, will compete in the championship finals on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. Wingate will face either second-seeded Carson-Newman or sixth-seeded Anderson in the title match.

The Bulldogs also avenged an earlier 1-0 loss to the Bears on the road on Saturday, October 22, in the regular season.

Wingate's Kaitlyn Brunworth (Littleton, Colo.) scored the lone goal of the match just 33 seconds before halftime. Brunworth finished off a shot from about 15 yards out off a pass from Colleen Zickert (Arlington Heights, Ill.), who was credited with the assist. The goal was Brunworth's third of the year.

Lenoir-Rhyne held a 20-10 advantage in shots taken despite the loss. The Bears also saw their six-match winning streak come to an end.

Wingate's Alexis Jones (Midway Park, N.C.) earned the shutout victory in goal after stopping six shots while senior goalkeeper Andrea Leano (San Diego, Calif.) suffered the loss for the Bears despite allowing just one score to go along with four saves.

Lenoir-Rhyne, the 2016 South Atlantic Conference Regular Season Champions, are ranked sixth in the latest NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Poll and will wait to see if it advances to the national postseason tournament. The selection show takes place on Monday.
