For the third time in program history, the Lenoir-Rhyne Football Team has advanced to a NCAA Regional Final and look for the second Final Four appearance in team history. They will face a West Florida team who was the National Runner Up in 2017.
This decade has been the most successful in the 100-year history for Lenoir-Rhyne who owns an 83-35 record and .703 winning percentage. The Bears have been the class of the South Atlantic Conference since the start of the decade, winning a league-high six championships and have eight more wins in this decade than Carson-Newman and 10 more than Wingate.Â
The success has started inside Moretz Stadium where the Bears are 8-1 all-time in NCAA Playoff games and have won a Division II-best 15 straight games. That 15-game winning streak broke the program record for most consecutive wins at home which had stood since 1961.Â
Lenoir-Rhyne is the only 13-0 team in Division II and the 13 wins match the program record for most victories in a season. LR went 13-2 in 2013 en route to an appearance in the National Championship game before falling to Northwest Missouri St.Â
The Argonauts dethroned defending National Champion Valdosta St. in a 38-35 shootout last Saturday. Â Anthony Johnson Jr. scored from a yard out on a fourth down play with six seconds to play to end the Blazers 24-game winning streak. After falling behind 35-31, quarterback Austin Reed led a perfectly executed two-minute drill where he connected with Tate Lehtio on four consecutive plays including a 15-yarder on fourth and eight. Lehito finished with a program-record 14 receptions.
Reed, the Gulf South Conference's Offensive Rookie of the Year, has thrown 28 touchdowns and just eight interceptions while completing 58.1 percent of his passes. Reed has thrown for 2,902 yards and has two WR with over 740 yards receiving.Â
UWF is looking to continue a trend of knocking off undefeated teams who own long home winning streaks. Valdosta St. entered last week with a 10-0 record and a 13-game home winning streak.Â
The Argonauts have never lost in road playoff games, going a perfect 6-0. Before beating Valdosta St., the Argonauts went to Wingate and handed the Bulldogs a 38-17 defeat.Â
The winner of this contest will move on to the NCAA Semifinal with location and opponent to be determined. The four remaining seeds will be re-seeded following the conclusion of Saturday's games.Â
