Johnson Leads LR Past Young Harris

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Jalen Johnson erupted for 34 points to lead Lenoir-Rhyne past Young Harris on Saturday night. The win was the 1,400th in program history, making LR one of just 30 programs in Division II to reach that milestone.

STATS AND INFO:
- This is the third straight win for LR over Young Harris in the conference crossover
- The 17 made 3-pointers is two shy of the single-game record of 19 which was set on Jan. 15, 2014 and tied against Mars Hill on Jan. 4, 2020
- Johnson's eight made 3-pointers are the most since Mason Hawks hit seven against Carson-Newman in January 2020
- 10 different players scored for the Bears

FIRST HALF:
- LR was absolutely on fire in the first half, knocking down 15 3-pointers in 26 attempts
- Johnson closed out the opening 20 minutes going 8-of-10 from the field and 7-of-8 from 3-point range
-  The Bears dropped 57 first-half points to grab a 57-43 lead going into the break
-  LR shot 56.8 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes of play

SECOND HALF:
- However, LR would go cold to start the second half and a quick 11-0 YHC run pulled the Mountain Lions within five at 59-54
- LR only had 12 second-half points in the first 11 minutes of action as Young Harris trimmed the lead to 69-67
- Tim Steele and Kevin Kangu added back-to-back baskets and Johnson and Kangu hit consecutive 3-pointers after a Young Harris bucket to push the lead back to double digits with 5:49 to play
- YHC got it down to five with 4:12 to play but a quick 6-2 run secured the win for LR

ABOUT THE BEARS:
- Kangu finished with 16 points and Nas Tyson had 13 points, six rebounds and six assists
- Steele had seven points and five boards
- LR shot 52.1 percent from the field for the game and 42.5 percent from long range
- LR only went to the line eight times and missed on five free throw attempts

NOTABLE LIONS:
- Not to be outdone by Johnson, Karl Chavis had 32 points on 13-of-18 shooting and added 15 rebounds
- Carl Cleveland notched a double-double as well with 12 points and 10 rebounds
- 12 different players saw the floor

UP NEXT: The Bears will jump into conference play on Wednesday when they host Wingate at 7:30 p.m.
