Bears Use Late Run to Win at Coker

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - Trailing 82-80 with 32 seconds left, the Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Basketball Team used a late 5-0 spurt to run past Coker in South Atlantic Conference play on Saturday afternoon. Jaquias Franklin tied the game with 17 seconds left and then Nas Tyson scored in transition with 11 seconds for the winning basket. Franklin's free throw with four seconds was the final point of the contest as Coker couldn't connect on a game-tying attempt late.

STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Franklin led the Bears with a career-high 27 points on 9-of-13 shooting. Franklin hit both of his 3-pointers and added nine rebounds while going 7-of-11 from the charity stripe. 
  • Tyson added 19 on 8-of-13 shooting and Tay Smith and Tim Steele each had 13. 
  • After hitting just one of 12 threes in the first half, LR got hot in the second half and connect on 5-of-8 from long range. 
  • As a team, LR shot 61 percent in the second half. 
  • Coker, who came in as one of the top scoring teams in the country, was held to their second lowest scoring output of the season. 
  • Demar Anderson came off the bench for Coker and produced a double-double with 18 points and 14 boards. 
  • LR dominated in the paint, outscoring the Cobras 44-28 in the lane. 
  • The Cobras led by as much as 10 points in the second half before the Bears stormed back. 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE: 
  • The Bears led for just 41 seconds in the second half.
  • Coker had started the month of December with a 114-point showing against Emory & Henry. 
  • The Cobras were held 17 points below their season average tonight. 
  • The LR defense has held back-to-back opponents to their second-worst scoring output of the season. 
  • At 3-1, the Bears are in third in the SAC standings. 
  • LR is allowing opponents to shoot just 30.5 percent from long range which is the best in the league. 
UP NEXT: The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Basketball Team will return home to take on Belmont Abbey in non-conference action on Tuesday at 1 p.m. inside Shuford Arena.
