Second Half Spurt Sends Bears Past Cavaliers

HICKORY, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Basketball Team used a 16-2 run in the second half to take a 45-43 lead and extend it to 61-45 in a home win on Saturday afternoon in Shuford Arena. Tay Smith led the way for LR with 21 points and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the field in the second half as LR improved to 9-5 overall on the season.

STATS OF THE GAME:
  • UVA Wise scored a bucket to make it a two point game with 13:27 before the Bears found another gear.
  • The 16-2 run was ignited by a driving layup by Nas Tyson and was culminated in a monster dunk by Jaheim Taylor.
  • In the run, LR held the Cavaliers to just one field goal in a four minute stretch. 
  • Taylor would account for 10 straight LR points as he helped push the lead to 17. 
  • The Cavs would cut into the lead late but never got within striking distance. 
  • Taylor would go 7-of-8 from the field in the second half and had 17 points in the final 20 minutes. 
  • As a team, LR went 21-for-31 from the field in the second half and 5-of-6 from long range. 
  • Taylor finished with 19 and Tyson added 12. 
  • Smith also led the Bears in rebounding with seven.

  • Lenoir-Rhyne led for nearly 33 minutes of game action and has a lead as large as 17 late in the second half. 
  • The duo of Smith and Taylor combined to go 13-of-14 from the field in the second half. 
  • This was the 2,600th all-time game for Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Basketball.
  • LR turned the ball over a season-low five times. 
  • Each team shot over 60 percent in the second half and combined for 101 points.
