Soltz second half brace sends Bears to SAC Championship

MATTHEWS, NC - Freshman Lilly Soltz took full advantage of the moment on Friday, scoring two second half goals to lead the Bears to a 3-1 win over Anderson in the SAC semifinals. Assisting her on both goals was none other than Evan O'Leary, who brings her career total to 29 assists. 

Prior to the game, Kara Gavaghan was honored with the SAC Elite 23 Award for having the highest GPA of any individual competing at the conference championships.

STATS OF THE MATCH:
  • The Bears scored on their first shot of the game, as Carola Busquets put in a solo in the 6th minute to quickly go up 1-0.
  • Anderson tied it up in the 33rd minute with a goal from Zoe Stevenson. 
  • Lenoir-Rhyne had multiple attempts near the end of the half, but the teams went into the break tied at 1-1.
  • After knocking on the door for much of the second half, Lilly Soltz found the eventual game winner, heading in a cross from Evan O'Leary in the 66th minute. 
  • Soltz and O'Leary connected the same way just six minutes later to make it a 3-1 Lenoir-Rhyne advantage. 
  • Riley Miller faced five late shots from the Trojans, but to no avail as the Bears held on for the two-goal win. 
  • The Bears out-shot the Trojans 18-10, and held a 13-4 edge in shots on goal. 
  • Evan O'Leary led the Bears with five shots. 
  • Riley Miller made three saves in goal. 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • Lilly Soltz's goals were her second and third of her season.
  • Evan O'Leary now sits at 13 assists on the season, tied for third in school history. 
  • Lenoir-Rhyne will look to win back-to-back SAC Tournament Championships for the first time in school history. 
  • This was Lenoir-Rhyne's 34th SAC Tournament victory.  
UP NEXT: The Bears move on to the SAC Championship Sunday in Matthews. They will take on No. 4 seeded Lincoln Memorial, who upset No. 1 seeded Wingate in a 5-4 thriller earlier tonight. These teams played once this season, tying 1-1 in Harrogate. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m., right after the Lenoir-Rhyne men's team takes on Limestone for their own SAC title.
