WINGATE, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Tennis Team was handed a 6-1 defeat from the Wingate Bulldogs in its final road match of the regular season.
The Bears got a good start to the afternoon when the No. 2 doubles team of Nellie Wahlberg and Alicia Wahlberg completed a 6-4 victory to win their fifth-straight match.
Unfortunately, the Bulldogs clinched the next two doubles lines to secure the first point of the match with a 6-3 win at the No. 3 spot and a 6-4 win at the No. 1 spot.
Heading into singles, Wingate was able to carry its momentum over from doubles as the Bulldogs won the first three matches in straight-set outcomes.
Although the Bulldogs clinched the match, the Bears did not back down as Nellie Wahlberg earned the lone point of the match with her win at the No. 4 line. In lieu of a traditional match, the freshman from Stockholm, Sweden, won her pro-set style match, 8-5.
Alicia Wahlberg, who suffered her first singles defeat of the season, got off to a good start in her match with a 7-5 first-set win. The senior from Stockholm, Sweden could not prevail though with a 7-5 second-set loss and a 11-9 defeat in the third-set tiebreaker.
UP NEXT: The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Tennis Team will conclude its season with a home contest against Lincoln Memorial. The regular season finale is slated for Saturday, April 13 at 1 p.m. from the YMCA of Catawba Valley.
