Bears fight off late Catawba run to win on senior day

HICKORY, N.C. - The Bears saw a 30-point lead fade in the second half but as he has done so many times this year, quarterback Khamoni Robinson came to the rescue. His 13-yard rushing touchdown with six seconds left gave the Bears a 48-46 win in their final game of the season. 

"Love the character and the fight of this team!" said head coach Doug Socha. "They believed and found a way to W1N!"

STORY OF THE GAME:
  • Catawba took up over eight minutes of possession on their first drive but were held to just a field goal.
  • Lenoir-Rhyne quickly answered, going up 7-3 after Trey Brenton caught a screen pass and took it 68 yards to the house.
  • Tye Roberson broke out for his third kickoff return touchdown of the season early in the second quarter, taking this one 95 yards to the house.
  • A few drives later the Bears extended the lead thanks to an Alex Boyd 19-yard rushing touchdown. 
  • After a muffed punt, Desmond Greene got the ball right back with his fifth interception of the year. 
  • Just before the half Khamoni Robinson rushed for a six-yard touchdown, putting the Bears up 28-6 at the break.
  • Songa Yates opened the second half with a touchdown reception off the pass from Robinson.
  • Senior Tate O'Bryan scored the fifth touchdown of his career late in the third, extending the lead to 42-12. 
  • Catawba then remembered why they are 7-3 on the year, scoring 34 unanswered points, and 27 in the fourth quarter, to take a late 46-42 lead. 
  • Khamoni Robinson then did what he does best, leading a drive down the field and capping it off with a 13-yard rushing touchdown for the win. 
STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Khamoni Robinson was 18-for-30 with 226 yards and three touchdowns. He also tallied 43 yards and two scores on the ground.
  • Despite only having just one reception, Trey Brenton led the team with 68 receiving yards. Songa Yates was tops with six catches. 
  • Alex Boyd was the team's leading rusher, finishing with 87 yards and a score. 
  • Latavius Moore was Lenoir-Rhyne's leading tackler, finishing with 12 total on the day.
  • Brodie Bradburn, James Ussery, and Tre'Von Cooper all recorded a tackle for loss. 
  • Tye Roberson fielded two kickoffs for 106 yards, highlighted by his 95-yard return for a score. 
  • Brayden Cresimore was a perfect 6-6 on PAT's. 
  • Catawba's Preston Brown set a new career high with 485 passing yards and five touchdowns.
  • Catawba finished with 626 yards of total offense, compared to 440 for Lenoir-Rhyne. 
  • Time of possession was dominated by the visitors, as Catawba led 36:28 - 23:32 in that category. 
  • The teams were a combined 10-for-10 on red zone scoring opportunities. 
BEYOND THE STATS:
  • Tye Roberson set a new school record with a 41.92 return average on kickoffs (min. 10 kickoff returns in a season).
  • Songa Yates finishes his career tied for fourth all-time with 18 receiving touchdowns 138 receptions.
  • Khamoni Robinson moved into fourth all-time in a single season with 2,355 passing yards and 20 touchdowns. 
  • Stewart Simmons' 41.85 punt average is sixth all time in LR history. 
  • The Bears now have their eight consecutive winning season.
