Bears sweep season series against Mars Hill at home

HICKORY, NC - Lenoir-Rhyne took care of business at home on Saturday with 78-69 victory against Mars Hill. Ziare Wells, Hantz Louis-Jeune, and Sam Martin led the Bears offense, combining for 45 points, 18 rebounds, and four assists.

The Bears sweep the season series against the Lions for the second consecutive season.

STORY OF THE GAME
  • A pair of dunks from Ziare Wells and Hantz Louis-Jeune started the scoring for the Bears in the opening minutes. 
  • A Kadyn Dawkins three-pointer extended Mars Hill's early lead to 12-4 with under 13 minutes left in the half.
  • The Bears took their first lead of the game 19-18 thanks to a  Ziare Wells three-pointer with under eight minutes left in the half.
  • A Tay Smith fastbreak layup gave Lenoir-Rhyne their largest lead of the game, 30-21, right before halftime. 
  • Sam Martin's dunk off a beautiful assist from Julien Dozier extended the LR lead to 44-36 seven minutes into the second half.
  • A Junior Hodnett steal led to a Tay Smith fastbreak dunk with 9:50 left in the game, giving the Bears their first double digit lead of the night. 
  • With under one minute remaining in regulation, Sam Martin sealed the game with a his third dunk of the game.
STATS OF THE MATCH:
  • Julian Dozier led the team with nine assists while also finishing with double figures in points (12).
  • Ziare Wells, Hantz Louis-Jeune, and Sam Martin all finished with 15 points in the victory.
  • Lenoir-Rhyne shot 29-for-62 (46.8%) from the field and 16-for-21 (76.2%) from the free throw line. 
  • The Bears outscored the Lions 48-30 in the paint and 15-6 in fastbreak points. 
  • Both teams finished with 35 rebounds, but LR led 18-10 in assists. 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • Lenoir-Rhyne now leads the all-time series 56-20 and have won the last four meetings against the Lions.
  • Mars Hill is the fourth conference rival the Bears have swept this season, joining Tusculum, Coker, and Emory & Henry.
  • Julien Dozier has collected 19 assists and eight steals in his last two home games.
  • Lenoir-Rhyne has produced at least 18 assists as a team in 13 of their 23 games this season. 
  • The Bears are the only team to reach 16 wins in the South Atlantic Conference with five games remaining on the season.  
UP NEXT: The Bears will be back in Shuford Arena on Wednesday when they play host to Anderson. The Trojans fell 87-77 at Catawba earlier tonight. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
