Men's Basketball falls in SAC semi-finals vs. Catawba

ROCK HILL, S.C. - A 16-point halftime deficit was too much for the Lenoir-Rhyne men's basketball team to overcome on Friday as they fell 96-89 to Catawba in the South Atlantic Conference semi-finals. 

Tyler Burraston led the Bears with 17 while Conner Tilley scored 13 points on a perfect 5-5 shooting in just five minutes of play.

STORY OF THE GAME:
  • Catawba hit four of their first five shots to jump out to a quick 10-0 lead. 
  • Lenoir-Rhyne battled back and cut the lead to one on an Akili Evans free throw eight minutes into the game.
  • Down 19-16, Lenoir-Rhyne went on a slump, going 0-5 from the field and committing five turnovers over a six minute stretch.
  • Catawba took advantage and pushed their lead to 19 with 6:04 left in the half.
  • The Catawba Indians led the Bears 43-27 at the break.
  • Lenoir-Rhyne won the second half 62-53, shooting 68% from the field and 63% from three.
  • The Bears chipped away and cut the lead to single digits, 67-58, with eight minutes left.
  • Conner Tilley hit three consecutive threes late but it was too little, too late.
STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Six Bears finished in double-figures, led by Tyler Burraston's 17.
  • Sam Martin led the team with five boards while Julian Dozier was tops with five assists.
  • Lenoir-Rhyne was 30-63 (47.6%) from the field, 13-31 (41.9%) from three, and 16-27 (59.3%) from the charity stripe.
  • Catawba went 33-79 (41.8%), 7-24 (29.2%) from three, and 23-32 (71.9%) from the free throw line.
  • Catawba forced the Bears into 16 turnvover and outscored them 40-30 in the paint.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • Catawba will face top seeded Anderson in the SAC Championship tomorrow at 4:00.
  • Conrad Luczynski scored his 1000th career point in their win over Emory & Henry Wednesday. 
  • After winning the previous five meetings, Lenoir-Rhyne has dropped two straight games to Catawba.
