Hickory, N.C. ? The Catawba College Volleyball Team (13-9, 6-6) held off Lenoir-Rhyne University (17-10, 3-7), 3-2, in five sets Wednesday evening in a South Atlantic Conference match at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium.? The Indians prevailed by scores of 25-21, 25-19, 23-25, 19-25 and 15-11.
Lenoir-Rhyne, which came back from a 2-0 deficit but fell in the fifth set, was led by sophomore outside hitter Lindsey Cantu (Orlando, Fla.) with 14 kills and 19 digs while freshman setter Meredith Lutz (Newton, N.C.) added 48 assists despite the setback.
Three more Lenoir-Rhyne players ? sophomore middle blocker Chelsea Hill (Lexington, N.C.) and senior outside hitters Kassi Henry (Denver, N.C.) and Jordan Ledford (Newton, N.C.) ? each tallied 10 kills each but it wasn?t enough.
Catawba was led by Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, Va.) and Shay Meeks (Kings Mountain, N.C.) with 16 and 15 kills, respectively, while Mai Zoua Lo (Hickory, N.C.) added a match-high 24 digs and three service aces as the Indians completed the season sweep of the Bears.
Megan Courson (Statesville, N.C.) dished out 40 assists as well for Catawba.
Lenoir-Rhyne travels to Greeneville, Tenn., to face Tusculum on Friday beginning at 7 p.m., while Catawba plays at Brevard on Saturday at 2 p.m.
