The Carson-Newman College Volleyball Team (17-7, 10-3) held on to defeat Lenoir-Rhyne University (17-13, 3-10), 3-2, Friday night in a South Atlantic Conference match at Holt Fieldhouse.? The Eagles won by scores of 25-23, 25-21, 22-25, 23-25 and 15-12 and remained alone in second place in the league standings.
Lenoir-Rhyne, who tried to overcome a 2-0 deficit, was led by sophomore outside hitter Lindsey Cantu (Orlando, Fla.) with a career-high 20 kills and 18 digs?and freshman?setter Meredith Lutz (Newton, N.C.) with a career-high 62 assists despite the setback.
Sophomore libero Marrissa Church (Statesville, N.C.) added 27 digs and sophomore middle blocker Chelsea Hill (Lexington, N.C.) finished with 16 kills for the Bears in the losing effort.
Carson-Newman was led by Nikki James (Cookeville, Tenn.) with 14 kills while Katie Troyer (Plain City, Ohio) and Jessica Schachleiter (Cincinnati, Ohio) added 13 kills each as the Eagles hit .331 for the match.?
