Greeneville, Tenn. ? The Lenoir-Rhyne University Volleyball Team (19-15) saw its season come to an end with a 3-1 loss to Carson-Newman College?(21-8) in the First Round of the 2009 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament Friday evening in Greeneville, Tenn.?
The Eagles, the second seed in the tournament, defeated the seventh-seeded Bears by scores of 25-16, 25-18, 27-29 and 25-18.
Lenoir-Rhyne freshman setter Meredith Lutz (Newton, N.C.) led Lenoir-Rhyne with a match-high 40 assists and 12 digs while sophomore outside hitter Lindsey Cantu (Orlando, Fla.) and sophomore middle blocker Chelsea Hill (Lexington, N.C.) added 11 and 10 kills, respectively.? Meanwhile, senior libero Elizabeth Flattery (Sparta, N.C.)?finished with?a team-high 17 digs despite the setback.
For Carson-Newman, Katie Troyer (Plain City, Ohio) led the way with a match-high 14 kills while Jessica Schachleiter (Cincinnati, Ohio) added 11 kills and 17 digs as the Eagles advanced to the tournament semifinals to take on the third-seeded Lady Railsplitters of Lincoln Memorial Saturday at 5 p.m.
The Eagles, who defeated the Bears for the third time this year, held a .215-.103 advantage in kill percentage and a 13.0-7.5 edge in blocks en route to the win.
