Bears take down Lander 3-1 to advance to NCAA Second Round

WINGATE, N.C. - Lenoir-Rhyne volleyball began their 2025 NCAA Tournament campaign with a four set victory against Lander in the opening round. Kayli Cleaver and Emmaleigh Allen combined for 31 kills while Emmie Modlin and Alicia Barbarito combined for 40 assists. 

Lenoir-Rhyne will face-off against #3 seeded Anderson Anderson for the fourth time this season in the second round of the NCAA Tournament tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.

"I'm so proud of this team for their response after the second set," said head coach Nicole Barringer. "We did our job defensively against the best outside in the Peach Belt. We had a complete game offensively and scored in a lot of different areas. Super proud of our entire team that helped us plan and execute against a really good team. Excited for the next round!"

STORY OF THE MATCH: 
  • Lander went on a 7-1 run to take an early 10-6 lead in the first set.
  • The Bears comeback came up short in the first set as Lander prevailed 25-23.
  • Lenoir-Rhyne dominated the second set, finishing with a .458 hitting % and holding the Bearcats to a match-low seven kills.
  • Alicia Barbarito connected with Emmie Modlin for the kill to even the score at 21 in the third set.
  • Three straight attack errors by Lander lifted the Bears to a 27-25 victory in the third set.
  • The Bears jumped ahead 9-5 early in the fourth set.
  • Emmaleigh Allen's fifth kill of the fourth set extended the Bears lead to 20-8.
  • Emmie Modlin secured the 25-15 victory with her sixth kill of the evening.
STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Lenoir-Rhyne finished with an advantage in kills (52-to-48), hitting % (.269-to-.126), and assists (45-to-42).
  • The Bears only committed 13 attack errors to Lander's 29.
  • The two teams combined for 28 block assists and nine service aces.
  • Hadley Prince led the team with 23 digs while Rachael Chambers finished with five block assists and six total blocks.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • This was Lenoir-Rhyne's first win in the NCAA Tournament since the 2021 season.
  • Nicole Barringer becomes just the coach (Dave Markland, Mark Wimberley) in Lenoir-Rhyne volleyball history to win an NCAA Tournament game.
  • This was the 19th all-time meeting between the Bears and Bearcats, Lander leads the all-time series now 10-9.
  • Emmaleigh Allen generated her fifth double-double this season after finishing with 13 kills and 10 digs.
  • Kayli Cleaver has produced 15 or more kills in eight matches this season for the Bears.
  • Emmie Modlin has 24 or more assists in three of the last four games.
UP NEXT: Lenoir-Rhyne will face-off against a familiar conference foe, Anderson University, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Trojans are coming off a four set victory against Augusta in the first round. The Bears pulled off a reverse sweep in their last matchup against the Trojans in the SAC-Semifinals. The match is set for tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. from Wingate's Cuddy Arena.
