The Lenoir-Rhyne University Men?s Basketball Team (3-8) snapped a four-game losing streak with a 70-63 win over Lander University (5-4) Tuesday afternoon on the final day of the New Year?s Classic at Horne Arena.? Senior guard Marcus Hodges (Wake Forest, N.C.) led the way for the Bears with a game-high 22 points including four three-pointers.
Junior forward D.J. Blackmon (Albemarle, N.C.) also scored in double figures for L-R as he totaled 14 points to go along with six rebounds.?
Lander?s Dane Sparrow (Matthews, N.C.) finished with a team-high 18 points while Antonio Pope (Savannah, Ga.) added a double-double (12 points and 15 rebounds) despite the setback.
Trailing 45-41 with 10:20 remaining in the game, Hodges gave Lenoir-Rhyne the lead for good with?three consecutive?three-pointers.
L-R would slowly increase its lead as the second half wore on and a pair of free throws by Hodges with 35 seconds left pushed the Bears advantage to?their biggest of the game at 70-59 with 35 seconds left.
The Bears also hit seven three-pointers and connected on 17-of-18 free throw attempts (94 percent).
Lenoir-Rhyne returns to South Atlantic Conference action on Saturday when it hosts Tusculum beginning at 8 p.m.
