Hickory, N.C. ? The No. 23 Lenoir-Rhyne University Women?s Basketball Team (5-1) won its fifth straight contest Saturday evening with a 74-58 victory over Georgia College (4-3) at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium.? With the victory, the Bears avenged their lone loss of the season to the Bobcats.
Lenoir-Rhyne senior guard Brittany Mitch (McLean, Va.) was one of four players to score in double figures for the Bears as she finished with a team-high 17 points while senior guard Jami Safrit (Hickory, N.C.) added 16 points for L-R.
Georgia College was paced by Chimere Jordan (Gray, Ga.), who led all scorers with 20 points.
L-R jumped out to a 39-25 lead at halftime before pushing its advantage to as many as 20 points with 15:40 left on a pair of free throws by sophomore guard Cameron Sealey (Gastonia, N.C.).
However, the Bobcats fought back and cut the deficit to eight points at 50-42 on a lay-up by Antoinette Reames (Orlando, Fla.) with 10:40 remaining but the Bears responded with nine straight points over the next three-plus minutes to put the contest away.
Sealey finished with 12 points for the Bears, who also shot 87 percent (27-of-31) from the free throw line.
Georgia College defeated L-R by a 68-67 score on November 16, 2009, in Milledgeville, Ga., in the season opener.
Lenoir-Rhyne next faces Queens on Tuesday in Charlotte, N.C., beginning at 7:30 p.m.
